This site is a photo-blog of a trip we took to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula and the Katmai coast in 2004.

We spent a few fun days in Anchorage on the front end enjoying the fine restaurants, micro-brews, and scenery Anchorage has to offer.  The route south to the Kenai Peninsula took us past Turnagain  Arm & Alyeska resort, through Cooper Landing & Ninilchik (with a side detour to Seward) , finally stopping in Alaska’s ‘banana belt’ village of Homer.   Homer was great – incredible scenery and a very cool art scene.  Plus, Homer Brewing!

The Hallo Bay Wilderness base camp is located in Katmai National Park and provides guides for photography tours featuring Alaskan coastal brown bears (same sub-species as Kodiaks).   With semi-permanent ‘tents’, a common dining area, eco-toilets, and dedicated cook it’s just rustic enough to bring back memories of Scout Camp.   Tons & tons of brown bears.  The base area is encircled with electric trip-wire for safety.   The camp is accessed via bush plane, using the nearby beach as a landing strip.   We ended up getting a free day in camp due to low cloud cover – we heard the plane, but he couldn’t land safely and had to return the next day.

An awesome experience – the pictures don’t do the trip justice.
